Graham McTavish on Buck, Dougal, Clanlands, TGOS and More

When This Guest of Summer co-producer and Outlander fan Jacki Lippman contacted me and asked if I’d like to interview Graham McTavish soon, I was chuffed (as you Brits like to say). Graham was, in fact, the first cast member I ever met, back in March of 2016, just before Season 2 aired. We met at a small fan dinner in a noisy German pub in Cologne, Germany, where we drank beer, ate schnitzel, and talked, a lot.

I attended quite a few fan conventions over the next couple of years, and ran into Graham a lot; it’s been a while since I’ve seen him, so it was a real pleasure to catch up. Like all of us these days, we find ourselves at home, so we used wonderful technology to connect – he from New Zealand, and I from Colorado. We talked on my Tuesday afternoon, his Wednesday morning, and we caught up about his new character of Buck, we revisited good old Dougal, he gave me the full update on Clanlands, and also This Guest of Summer. He even answered some fan questions at the end, even though we ran over time – thank you Graham!

I asked my first questions to the cast at this fan convention, and I launched my blog the next month, (April 6, 2016). I’ve put in 4 years of hard work on it and my craft since then. Fun to look back.

Fun Q&A Video with Graham, Lotte, Grant, Duncan, & Finn, The Gathering2016

This was Duncan Lacroix’s first fan convention, and also Grant O’Rourke, Annette Badland, Lotte Verbeek, Finn Den Hertog, and Gillebrìde MacMillan were there, along with a lot of other fans, including a group of wonderful German women. The weekend was an absolute blast. The good old days, indeed.

  5. Well done Courtney! Mr. MacTavish’s recounting of his makeup experiences with The Hobbit, followed by his ideas for Dougal’s minimal needs with Outlander was very funny and also tied in with my question. I was interested to learn more about the upcoming Clanlands series and companion book project. Very nice that he could share a lot of new information about his work on Outlander and other aspects of his career. How fortunate we fans are that so many people involved with Outlander are genuinely nice and genuinely like one another. This I attribute a great deal to the success of the series. Good job adding in the scenes discussed and editing.

  6. So well done! Congratulations. It was a delight to hear about his process and experiences. He’s a great interviewee- articulate, compassionate and thoughtful.
