Season 8 Filming is Underway & News on Season 7B

Just a quickie – Starz released a video along with the announcement that filming for Season 8, which will be a total of 10 episodes and will be Outlander’s last season, is underway.

(Did you spot Esmeralda? Is this foreshadowing for a possible ending for Season 7B?)

Sam mentioned in a recent interview that Season 8 filming will probably run through October of 2024. We just found out that we’ll get Part 2 of Season 7 the following month – in November of this year. Presumably, Season 8 will be released sometime in 2025.

According to TV Guide, Maril said that Season 7 will cover books 6, 7 and the beginning of 8! Phew. She also said that the 8th season will cover Book 9, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.

So, I just can’t help thinking… if they’re really gonna attempt to get through 7, 8, and 9 in 18 episodes, surely they have to go on and finish the story?? And do Season 10!!??? How can they leave it after the penultimate book?  What are your thoughts?

  1. I’ve seen the question about whether they would come back for a book 10 movie. That would be great, I’d love that if it happens. However since Book 1 took 16 eps, and Season 7 is squishing books 6, 7 & part of 8 in, a lot of fun, juicy storyline is clearly not going to be included. So I wonder how a +/- 2-hour movie would be able to cover the end of the story with the same level of beauty, involvement, intricacy, care? It’ll be bare bones. Beautifully done, I’m sure, but still. I loved watching S6 & 7, yet so much was not in them bc of fewer eps, ie less time to build the story lines. And we care about how Claire & Jamie age together, live their love for each other. My 2¢.

    • I don’t think a two hour movie could do it well.

I will say that they’ve gotten WAY better – since Matt first took over in the second half of Season 3 – at the skill of adapting. In fact because he knows the material so well – I think he’s even better than Ron at this point – because – let’s face it – the story is WAY more complex at this stage. Season 1 came almost directly from the first book, which was awesome, but they just can’t do that anymore.

Anyway – it’ll be interesting to see how they did in that regard with S7 Part 2 – it’s a tall order imo.

  2. It’s 16 episodes not 18. Of course they can finish the “show” story with S8. They’ve written their own ending. I don’t think there will be a movie or any TV adaptation of Book 10. The lead actors are ready to move on, and who knows what the Tall Ships team would be involved with by the time Book 10 is ready to be adapted.

  3. Good post Courtney. Cannot see book nine as the last season because it ends as a cliffhanger. Maybe Maril meant part of book 9? Yes, I spied Esmeralda
That was cheeky of them. 😁

    • Maybe they’ll end on a cliffhanger to leave the door open? Maybe they’ve talked them into doing some return thing after a break? I guess we’ll see. Talk soon xo

  4. Just really hope we get both the Monmouth bit and Kings Mountain. I am really looking forward to Jaimie and Williams relationship developing… Sam and Charles will do that justice. So many great things to choose from in these books ( will we get Jaimie reading Franks book?)
